The Work Wellbeing Check-In: Pinpoint Where to Start
Over the last few weeks, we’ve explored the 8 dimensions of wellbeing at work, including how each one shows up on the job and what to watch for when things feel out of balance. You might be asking yourself: Where do I go from here? Which dimension should I focus on first to make the biggest impact in my work life?
This check-in is designed to help you discover where to focus your efforts and just as importantly, how to celebrate the dimensions in which you are already excelling.
Step 1: Score Each Dimension
Read the statement for each dimension and mark it:
(+) Flourishing — You feel strong, stable, or confident here.
(○) Stable — Going okay. Keep an eye on it.
(!) Challenging — Out of sync right now. This is your starting point.
Step 2: Look at the Opportunities
Focus on the dimensions you marked (!). These are the places where small steps can create the biggest lift. If you marked more than one, choose the one that feels hardest. To paraphrase Mark Twain, if you have two frogs to eat, start with the big one. Tackling the toughest spot first can reduce pressure across the rest of your life and work.
Step 3: Save the Circles for Later
The (○) marks are “keep an eye on it” areas. Revisit them after you make progress on your primary focus. In a month, come back and re-mark the dimensions to see what shifted. Look for ways to habit stack these too. For example:
Pair Physical with Social by setting a walking 1:1.
Pair Environmental with Emotional by decluttering your desk before a hard task.
Pair Intellectual with Social by hosting a short lunch-and-learn.
Step 4: Celebrate Your Plusses
Your (+) marks are strengths. Use them and celebrate them. Try one quick reward matched to your wins:
Emotional
Protect a 30-minute decompress block before an important meeting with music, a short walk, or a breathwork meditation session.
Physical
Upgrade your water bottle, book a massage, or replace worn walking shoes.
Social
Schedule a team coffee chat or happy hour to spend time with your colleagues outside work.
Intellectual
Buy a book or online course and block time on your calendar for a professional development hour.
Spiritual
Revisit your values and align a weekly focus block to what matters most.
Environmental
Add a plant or task light to your desk or add an ergonomic furniture piece to your setup.
Occupational
Treat your mentor to a coffee while you share about a project or progress you are proud of.
Financial
Set aside a small “joy fund” or take advantage of a benefit you haven’t maximized.
Remember: Strength in one area can support growth in others.
